Abstract
This is a very exciting time to be involved in the Geomatics industry, with technology changing in the profession so rapidly. Optron has created a new division called New Business and technology and the idea is that it keeps scanning the horizon for new technologies that can be employed by the profession. My intention is to showcase some of these new technologies.
Currently we are investigating the following technologies: Ground Penetrating radar for mapping underground utilities, synthetic aperture radar for slope stability monitoring and monitoring ground motion with satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry, unmanned aerial survey systems, both fixed-wing and vertical take-off and landing systems and new open pit mine planning software to optimize the planning process and cut down design time by up to 90%. Along with this I would like to demonstrate the advances made in 3D mine visualization using the new gaming programing platform. Building Information Management (BIM) is also an area that we are looking in to extensively in the hope the geomatics profession will take advantage of the opportunity that this opens up for them, with their geospatial expertise.
