Abstract

1.8 billion youth, aged 15 – 24, live globally and as much as 70% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa is aged under 30. In this context, youth represent not simply a ‘future’ but a very real present opportunity that must be recognized. . As the largest global demographic group today, the contribution of young people in partnership with broader communities will make the difference between the success and failure of the post-2015 sustainable development agenda, particularly in the land governance sector.

The engagement of young professionals will be critical to sustaining equitable, pro-poor land governance initiatives but how can we ensure the continued engagement and meaningful participation of skilled, well-rounded young professionals into the future? This paper provides an overview of the initiatives and growth of the International Federation of Surveyors Young Surveyors Network across Africa. It presents the results of a survey of established young surveyor networks, to demonstrate the activities and participation of young professionals within their local and professional communities. This paper also identifies the key needs of young surveyors into the future, to best realize their potential, as individuals and as a significant sector of society.
